St. Elizabeths Phase 1B
Project type
Government; Adapted Reuse Renovation; Design-Build
Date
September 2013
Location
Dept. of Homeland Security St. Elizabeths Campus, Washington, DC
Project Information
$84.3M. Renovation/rehabilitation of Buildings 31, 33-34, 37, 49 and 52. Since the St. Elizabeths campus is a designated National Historic Landmark and its buildings, viewshed and landscape are protected, all efforts were made to preserve the existing buildings while implementing programmatic campus requirements.
A few of the original buildings maintain their original function (with some enhancements), such as the campus theater (Hitchcock Hall) and the dining hall/kitchen (Building 33-34). The remainder of this phase's adaptive reuse buildings are repurposed into the USCG Exchange, bank facility and campus security. Also included in this development is a new, sub-terranean campus fitness center, which subtly integrates within the natural slope and maintains the Historic Viewshed, also on the Historic Register.
